Learn to use color in fresh and masterful ways.

Ten-week online workshop.
Registration closed.

One surefire way to build an understanding of color is to work with paints – mixing colors and exploring relationships in real time.

This class is designed to teach you how to evaluate colors you see and use, whether you work with paper or fabric. Until you have actually mixed colors together, added white, gray or black, and observed the outcome, color terminology remains a set of terms that can be intimidating and confusing!

The good news is that anyone can learn to look at a color and mix a perfect match. It’s an invaluable skill for every artist, no matter what medium you prefer. Mixing color using French knots is not very different from mixing color with paints from a tube. It’s all about understanding hue, value and the brightness or dullness of a color, which we refer to as intensity – and using the information guide the colors you combine.

In addition to making a set of useful tools that will allow you to analyze colors you are using, we will also explore color relationships in detail by creating a series of assignments with hand painted papers.

At the completion of the course, you will have painted a set of color wheels, gray scales, intensity studies, and created collages representing the five primary color relationships: complements, analogous colors, triadic colors, split-complements and tetradic, and will be capable of using color in fresh and masterful ways.

All lessons are recorded for later viewing, as are the live Q&A sessions, and the bonus live lesson. Live events happen on Zoom.

What People Are Saying

Jane, I am totally impressed by the quality of this course. I wasn't sure about signing on for an online art class, but since you were sponsoring it, I knew it would be fabulous and...I was right!

The videos were so well edited - I felt I was having a private lesson with you.

It was extremely helpful that you responded so quickly to emailed questions and comments on samples that we posted. Overall, a wonderful experience! Thanks!

— Chris S.

Jane is one of the most giving, generous, kind and talented teachers that I have experienced.

I was in the recent Color and Collage class where she instructed us in color mixing and creating collage pieces from the papers we painted. I learned a great deal about the process of mixing colors using white, black and gray.

I am very happy with the results that I created. I highly recommend her online courses and her YouTube videos.

Thank you so much for this class.  I do feel so much more confident about color now.

Your expertise and teaching method have been a pleasure for me.  The lectures were so full of information and insight, the exercises were invaluable.  And it all came together for me in the final exercises ”Learning from an Expert.”  I learned to use the tools we created earlier and also began to have a little instinct about what I needed to do to match a color.

I will see you in the Dye Mastery class.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I recommend the paints from Prochem because they are exactly the colors we need in order to mix other colors perfectly. They are textile paints because many people want to print on fabric. Based on what your work is like and what your preferences are, you may not need textile paints. That’s why I suggested the tube acrylics, but again, they need to be specific colors in order to achieve the goals of the course.

You probably know that colors can lean either “warm” or “cool” meaning they have an orange cast or a blue cast, which might be imperceptible unless they are compared to other colors. That’s why I provide the color constant cards and use those as a guide throughout the lessons. If you have paints but they aren’t the purest versions you can find, then you won’t get accurate mixes from them. If your red has an orange cast, for instance, when you add it to blue to make violet, it will never be right, because the orange in the paint will shift the color. That’s one of the important things we observe as we go through the lessons.

Some of the colors you have may be fine, but it’s sort of a crapshoot to just use what you happen to have. Dyes won’t be applicable at all for this course, and inks are thin and therefore usually transparent so those are not a good match.

I hope this is helpful as you think about what you want to do.

Once you see how the paints work and get a handle on mixing, you can adapt what you know to any medium, which is why this is so useful. But starting with the materials that make the goal easier to achieve is important.

  • Email Zenna and she will share a code with you to discount the fee depending on which supplies you already have.

  • I’ve gotten questions about paints to buy if you like outside the US and don’t want to pay the shipping costs, which is understandable! The tube acrylic paints will work for most exercises, but if you want to paint on fabric with softer paint, these paints might be an option in NZ or AU.

If you live somewhere else and do a web search and find paints that might be candidates, send me a link and I’ll take a look. I just spent 30 minutes looking through amazon.com.uk and I didn’t find anything that was ideal.
