Twelve-week online course.
Begins September 6th, 2026!
A twelve-week class in making work that says something. Composition, story, and surface design — all in one place.
This class is designed to teach you how to move from an idea to a finished piece of work — one that holds together visually and means something to you.
Until you've actually worked through the process — generating ideas, building a composition, choosing your materials, and documenting your steps along the way — storytelling in art can feel like an abstract idea, something other people seem to just know how to do.
The good news is that this is a skill, and it can be learned. We'll work through five components together: storytelling, composition, personal artistic preference, technique, and surface design. By the end, you'll have a finished body of work and a process you can return to again and again.
Some visual stories have elements that viewers recognize.
Others are abstract stories that speak in color and form.
What stories could your artwork tell?
As I planned this new online course I realized it’s the culmination of my teaching career. If you wonder whether this is the course for you, ask yourself these questions:
Do you want to know where to find ideas you can turn into visual stories that are distinctively yours?
Do you want to know how to use that arsenal of techniques and materials you’ve stockpiled?
Do you want to FINALLY understand the authentic concepts of composition and rebuke fancy art speak?
Do you want to tap into the confidence you have always had when it comes to creating?
If you answered yes to one or more of those questions, this is the course you have been imagining – and it isn’t out there on some hazy horizon.
It’s right here with me now.
Twelve weeks of storytelling.
Learn where ideas actually come from — memory, free association, writing prompts.
You'll work through color strategy and start claiming a visual language that's yours alone.
Master and utilize composition.
Understand contrast, relationship, and focal point, using the Stage Play analogy to order what matters most in a piece.
You'll learn to recognize what makes a composition hold together — and what pulls it apart.
Surface design PLAY!
Dyes, discharge agents, resists, the gel plate, metal leaf, and transfers — our library covers it all.
You'll learn what each technique can do, so you can choose the right one for the work in front of you.
