Melinda A.

Who are you and what physical path has your life taken?

I was born and raised in Omaha, NE.  I am the oldest daughter and have 2 sisters.  I attended the University of Nebraska-Omaha & Lincoln and received a Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in apparel and textile design.  While completing my degree, I worked full-time and held a part-time job.  I also got married.

My husband & I moved to Wyoming as I was finishing my Bachelor’s degree.  In Wyoming, I worked for several different retailers.  I also went back to school and received a Master’s degree with a focus on wearable art.  After completing my Master’s degree I began my Ph.D.  For my Ph.D., I completed many of my classes at Colorado State University and finished my degree from University of Wyoming in Adult Education.  While finishing my degree, I worked at Texas Tech University.  Once I completed my degree, I took a job at the University of the Incarnate Word where I have been for 10.5 years.

My husband finished his graduate work and moved home in 2011, prior to this we lived apart for nine years.  In December 2012, after almost 20 years of marriage, we had a daughter.  In 2012, I also began working on an MBA.

How do you work and what do you love to do?

I try to come up with an idea, begin the pattern, make the sample and go from there.  I will put it on the body to see if I like it.  I will draw in patterns on the sample to see if I still like the idea or need to make changes.  I then move to the final garment.  I will work on it and let it sit so I can let the ideas percolate and see if I still like the idea or if changes are needed.

What I really love to do is use paints and dye fabric.  However, I don’t do any of this anymore.  I just buy fabric in the colors I want.

What do I care about?

I really don’t know anymore.  I have spent so much time creating pieces to meet the needs of particular competitions or what seems to be what will get accepted and I have time to complete it that I don’t do much else.  It has been all about publish or perish in the life academe.  Getting tenure and promotions has really been the focus of my work.

REVISED

Who are you and what physical path has your life taken?

From a young age I had always wanted to be involved in the fashion industry.  In college, I studied textile and apparel design.  It was here that I was introduced to different forms of textile art.  This interested created the desire to go to graduate school and further my studies.  It was in graduate school that I found an interest in clothing as art and not function.  Why does everything need to be wearable and functional?

How do you work and what do you love to do?

What I love to do is clothing that are NOT functional.  I use many different fabric manipulations to create these pieces.  Recently, I have been including different aspects of quilting into these pieces.  I also love to include color and use different dyes and paints to create movement and patterns.

What do I care about?

I want people to see clothing as art not just function and protection.
